SUMMARY:Music Gallery Presents: X Avant XIX - Diffuse
DESCRIPTION:The spinning of a record envelopes our sanctuary space using the all-new multi-channel ATMOS surround system. \nFor night two of X Avant XIX: TeXture\, sounds scatter around and envelop the Music Gallery as Exit Points takes over the space for the launch of their first vinyl record\, “You Are The Right Length”\, with a 12-channel surround sound listening experience. Recorded performances by 7 Toronto-based improvisation ensembles are diffused live throughout speakers that encircle listeners. \nGayle Young\, Zoma\, and Michael Palumbo will close out the night with live performances that are also spatialized on the surround sound system. The gallery space will also exhibit Exit Points concert photographs by Mike Filippov\, Eugene Huo\, Bryanna Reilly\, and Stephen Humphrey\, and will house a special record shop and vinyl listening booths. \nExit Points is a Toronto-based free-improvisation concert series and record label that brings together listeners and musicians from diverse sonic backgrounds. Each monthly concert creates a unique space for music communities to interact\, resulting in one-of-a-kind performances that are later released as records. \nCurated by Michael Palumbo\, Artistic Director of Exit Points

SUMMARY:Music Gallery Presents: X Avant XIX – Refraction
DESCRIPTION:Sounds metamorphose from small to big as Music Gallery OGs The Glass Orchestra bring back beloved glass noises and future proof fills every corner with sound. \nFor the last night of X AVANT XIX: TeXture\, we bring back MG OGs The Glass Orchestra\, the only ensemble in the world that performs and composes with their own glass instruments. Founded in 1977 and entering its 44th year\, the Glass Orchestra continues to explore the ethereal\, expansive\, and percussive possibilities of glass using bowls\, goblets\, tubes\, xylophones\, bells\, and other uniquely designed instruments. \nFuture proof brings in some pedal-mania and ends the night with huge\, avant-groove sounds that rush and wash the whole space. With two beloved Toronto improvisers making small and BIG sounds\, this night is not to be missed. \nIn our gallery space\, Toronto-based artist Michael Fawcett builds a custom\, texture-inspired interactive sound installation that is to be both seen and heard.\nFor more information and tickets\, click here!

SUMMARY:Derek Gripper Live in Concert
DESCRIPTION:“A New African String Theory” with Derek Gripper is not just a concert; it’s an immersive musical exploration that bridges continents and genres. As a globally renowned South African guitarist\, Gripper has rewritten the narrative of classical guitar by infusing it with the captivating sounds of the West African kora\, a 21 stringed harp. \nGripper’s transformative journey began with the release of “One Night on Earth\,” his translations of the music of kora virtuoso Toumani Diabaté. Celebrated classical guitarist John Williams said it seemed “absolutely impossible until I heard Derek Gripper do it\,” leading to collaborations with this icon of the guitar at London’s Shakespeare’s Globe\, as well as a collaboration with Toumani Diabaté at The Festival Acoustik in Bamako\, Mali. Even Gripper’s debut at the revered Carnegie Hall saw him performing alongside Mali’s Trio da Kali\, an endorsement of his revolutionary approach. \nRecent recordings like “A Year of Swimming\,” “Billy Goes to Durban\,” and his latest album with kora master Ballaké Sissoko\, introduce original compositions and improvisations\, each a testament to his dedication to evolving and challenging his musical style. Moreover\, his recordings of the solo works of J.S. Bach have been a fascinating study in the symbiosis of African music and early European melodies\, revealing the freedom and universality of one of Europe’s great improvising musicians. \n“A New African String Theory” captures the essence of the human experience in the importance of rediscovering ourselves through dialogue. \nSpecial note: The great Malian kora player Toumani passed away unexpectedly in July of 2024. To commemorate the passing of one of Africa’s great virtuosos\, Derek will perform the five compositions off Toumani’s debut album “Kaira” in a brand new\, never before performed\, rendition of these classics of the West African repertoire.

SUMMARY:Ark: In Search of Surrender
DESCRIPTION:Ark is an immersive experience that explores the potential for communal healing and connection\, inspired by indigenous African wisdom. \nJoin us for an immersive experience involving a ritual ceremony\, led by O D U D U. Participants are encouraged to bring personal artifacts\, such as letters\, jewelry or photographs\, as offerings. \nGuided by a live musical performance\, the ritual begins with a choreographed procession from the symbolic “Village” to the “Shrine”; a striking 13-foot-tall sculpture meticulously crafted by the architect. There\, selected participants will exchange their offerings for a Seed which they will sanctify with water – a metaphor for the nurturing cycle of life. \nA communal gathering will follow\, offering space for reflection\, feedback\, and connection\, with music and an intimate conversation to close the evening.

SUMMARY:BFSA X Tailoring Black Style Fashion Show
DESCRIPTION:BFSA’s Tailoring Black Style Fashion show explores the purpose and power of Black fashion beyond the constraints of colonial and white gaze ideals. Inspired by the MET Gala’s 2025 exhibition\, this show critiques how Black style has been historically reshaped to align with Eurocentric norms\, questioning who is tailoring and why. \nWe are inviting five designers (Max Twum-Antwi\, Uwadiunor Ife\, Mufaro\, Navern Nash-Longshaw\, and Tony Digba) to respond to these provocations and redefine what tailoring Black style means to them. By highlighting Black culture beyond assimilation\, this show affirms that Black creativity is limitless\, untamed\, and unapologetically self-defined.
