DESCRIPTION:The Music Gallery is pleased to present AWAKE\, a night dedicated to the delicate dance between daydreams and insomnia with:\nJoseph Shabason (supported by: Thom Gill\, Bram Gielen\, Hugh Marsh\, Phil Melanson and Nicole Rampersaud)\nEmissive\nLucy Cameron\n\nAWAKE explores the contrast between the beauty your eyes consume in the day\, and the struggle in closing them at night.\nThe night begins with the documentary short\, AWAKE\, by Lucy Cameron. Emissive will provide live ambient electronic composition dedicated to insomnia following the screening.\n\nHeadlining is Joseph Shabason\, Canadian multi-instrumentalist and composer\, best known for playing the saxophone and member of bands such as DIANA\, Destroyer and The War on Drugs. As a solo project\, he has released experimental ambient jazz albums under his own name. For this special performance\, he will be accompanied by his composed band of highly acclaimed musicians (Thom Gill\, Bram Gielen\, Hugh Marsh\, Phil Melanson and Nicole Rampersaud) improvising their daydreams.

Three outstanding musicians\, and three monumental chamber works featuring the inimitable Joaquin Valdepeñas\, David Hetherington and Serouj Kradjian. This intimate concert will be presented at Bathurst 918 Centre for a limited audience. \n—– \nProgram: \nMax Bruch – Eight Pieces Op. 83 for clarinet\, cello and pinao \nNino Rota – Trio (1973) for clarinet\, cello and piano \nLudwig Van Beethoven – Trio in B flat op. 11 for clarinet\, cello and piano \n—– \nAmici Chamber Ensemble:\nConsidered one of the most distinguished clarinetists of his generation\, Toronto Symphony Orchestra Principal Clarinetist Joaquin Valdepeñas makes appearances as a soloist\, chamber musician and conductor\, at festivals & concert series throughout the world. A prolific recording artist\, he is a two-time Juno award winner and GRAMMY®-award nominee. \nDavid Hetherington\, for years the assistant principal cellist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra\, performs regularly as a chamber musician as well as working frequently with contemporary music ensembles such as New Music Concerts and Soundstreams Canada. Mr. Hetherington plays his 1695 cello made by Giovanni Grancino of Milan “with rare delicacy and clarity”. \nJuno-winning and Grammy-nominated pianist and composer Serouj Kradjian is hailed as a “keyboard acrobat” of “crystal virtuosity” by the press. He has established himself as a versatile artist whose readiness to break boundaries and explore different styles has made him an exciting voice on the international music scene. He is regularly invited to appear as soloist and chamber musician in North America and Europe.

DESCRIPTION:The Music Gallery is pleased to present EMERGENTS I\, a 4-part series entitled Possible Worlds December 14-17. The events are dedicated to the notion of musical world-building\, participating artists are encouraged to explore and improvise with instruments and experiment with collaborative performances.\n\nNight one is a workshop led by saxophonist\, clarinetist\, instrument maker\, and MG family member Naomi McCarroll-Butler\, who will be leading us through a series of guided improvisations using graphic scores and conduction. Aimed at community members and early-career artists interested in exploring collective music-making\, this will be a space for people with different artistic interests and backgrounds to meet\, speak and create together.\n\nAll levels and forms of musical experience are encouraged\, and knowledge of musical notation is not required. There will be space to participate or to observe\, and sound making objects will be provided onsite. If you play an instrument\, bring it!

DESCRIPTION:Night two of Possible Worlds is a concert diving into hacking\, breaking and reinventing. Stephanie Castonguay opens the night with her self-built light-scanner instruments in a reflective audio/visual set\, co-presented with artist-run centre PIX FILM. Followed by a performance by Skin Tone (James Goddard)\, who uses voice\, saxophone\, mbira\, and electronics to lean into the beauty and clarity of distortion.\n\nPart of the Emergents series\, curated by Sara Constant.\n\nStephanie’s performance was developed as part of PIX FILM’s studio immersion program\, with support from The Petman Foundation.
