SUMMARY:New Music Concerts and the Music Gallery present The Mouths That Roar: Gabriel Dharmoo + Janice Jackson
DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets Here \n$35 Regular\n$25 MG Members\, Seniors\, Arts Workers\n$10 Students \nAn outrageous double bill of vocal pyrotechnics featuring Gabriel Dharmoo and Janice Jackson. Montreal composer/performer Gabriel Dharmoo’s Anthropologies imaginaires (Imaginary Anthropologies) is a solo vocal performance that interacts with a video mockumentary. Various odd or isolated vocal expressions from around the world are woven together and revisited through imaginary folklore and experimental voice techniques\, showcasing the virtuosity\, versatility\, and strangeness of the human voice. The result is a humorous and disturbing exploration of post-colonialism\, post-exoticism\, cultural extinction\, globalization\, normalized racism and cultural appropriation. Halifax-based soprano Jackson’s Voice Dance is a program of solo vocal compositions\, many written especially for her. Over the past 30 years Jackson has performed and perfected a large body of solo voice pieces from composers around the world. From pure extended vocal techniques (Marie Pelletier) to theatre without words (Alice Ping Yee Ho) to solo mini opera (James Rolfe) these pieces are guaranteed to excite\, stimulate\, and amuse.

SUMMARY:The Music Gallery Presents: Ziibiwan “Giizis” Album Release with Phedre and Melody McKiver
DESCRIPTION:$15 Regular/$13 Advance/$10 Students\, Members\nadd $5 to your ticket for a download code for Giizis\n \nPurchase tickets here: https://www.showclix.com/event/ziibiwan/listing?fbclid=IwAR0JE4h7SMCZamvUAuH7ClV3VdHA-DoycEUJPSwXC2T6E2XmAkGBXHPtp0Y \nAnishinaabe experimental-electronic producer Ziibiwan has travelled a long road in just a few short years. Whether in their own music or in DJ sets\, their spacious rhythmscapes evoke tranquility\, the natural world and wisdom from elder generations within modern contexts. For their much-anticipated debut album release Giizis\, Ziibiwan has gathered a few of their close allies to celebrate the occasion. \nSome of Toronto’s most brilliantly experimental pop comes from Phedre. Their richly-textured compositions have grown into instrumental sets of high-bpm rhythmic soundscapes\, performed live using sequencers and synthesizers. The ever-changing bass-heavy sets pay tribute to club\, breakbeat\, jungle and techno\, while maintaining Phèdre’s own unique sense of musical beat exploration. \nMelody McKiver has worked with Ziibiwan for a number of years and is no stranger to the MG\, having last appeared on our stage alongside Lido Pimienta six years ago. Melody’s musical work integrates electronics with Western classical music to shape a new genre of Anishinaabe compositions. Their debut EP Reckoning was nominated for an Indigenous Music Award\, and they were a participant in the Banff Centre for the Arts’ inaugural Indigenous Classical Music Gathering. Melody is involved in their community as a mentor with the Indigenous Music Mentorship Program\, and is employed as a youth worker in Sioux Lookout\, providing mental health and cultural supports to First Nations students.

SUMMARY:The Music Gallery Presents: When Did Transparency Become So Opaque?
DESCRIPTION:When Did Transparency Become So Opaque? \nPanel Discussion and Performance\nCurated by Olivia Shortt\nPWYW ($10 suggested) \nClick here to RSVP \nThe Music Gallery presents a panel on transparency in music and arts programming in Tkarón:to. There is a deep need in this city and beyond to speak honestly about programming\, curation and producing in a way that organizations can both benefit and learn from the discussions. This panel will explore questions around what programmers and curators (ie. people with power) from multiple artistic disciplines are doing (as well as not doing)  in their organizations to program\, hire and work in a more inclusive and intersectional manner. The evening also features a performance by Carly Gordon and friends’ work which combines ASL and opera. \nCuratorial statement: \n“Personally\, I am both frustrated and incredibly hopeful for the future of the arts in Toronto. There is a beautiful community in this city so willing to make changes and contribute to the artists who live here. We are so afraid to have both our errors become public. Failure is not allowed \nLet’s make mistakes and be honest about it. Hindsight is 2020 as they say. \nThis is a period of time where equity-seeking folks are struggling to be heard without fear of pushback from the art forms that they exist and create within\, which are often white-led organizations. Can we as the audience\, the granting bodies\, the foundation funding arts\, the donors funding art\, ask for art that reflects not only the people in our communities but also the voices and opinions of those art-makers? We are in a period of time where any questions that arise around what the intention of an organizations’ programming can become heavily scrutinized. Where is the transparency? Who are the voices leading these organizations? How are they supporting artists in their programming? When arts programmers look inward and criticize ourselves\, do they end up patting ourselves on the back because of checked-off boxes\, or do they realize that there is more hard work to be done? \nMaking mistakes in the arts feels difficult but is a very necessary part of growth. Let’s take space to discuss the successes of art-makers and organizations who are making the necessary efforts to do better\, grow and what success looks like after making mistakes. This is an opportunity to hear and discuss examples of positive success in working to be more transparent in our efforts to develop arts programming.” \nModerator: Cole Alvis\nPanelists: Ian Cusson\, Menon Dwarka\, Teiya Kasahara\, Asad Raza \nPerformance: Carly Gordon and ASL + Opera Project

DESCRIPTION:The Music Gallery presents\nEmergents II: Bakarlari\npart of the Emergents Series\nCurated by Sarah Constant \nSunday March 1\n$12 Regular / Advanced $8 Member/Student\nDoors 7:30PM / Concert 8PM \nIn this concert\, Montreal-based soloists collective Bakarlari plays in Toronto for the first time. \nActive across Canada and internationally as improvisers and performers of experimental music\, the members of Bakarlari—trumpeter Émilie Fortin\, tubist Michael Mansourati\, and clarinetist Charlotte Layec—have come together with a focus on new solo music: performances of rarely-heard pieces for their instruments\, the development of new single-instrument projects\, and the creation of concerts that bring together their three distinct sonic vocabularies. \nAt the Music Gallery\, Bakarlari will present their latest project\, pairing contemporary solo works for trumpet\, tuba\, and clarinet with new pieces developed with early-career and Toronto-based composers. Between them\, the collective will play solo compositions by Olga Neuwirth\, Cort Lippe\, and Elliott Carter alongside new collaborations with composers Alexandre David\, Quinn Jacobs\, and Olivia Shortt—as well as a first-ever ensemble appearance for the premiere of a new trio by Toronto/Hamilton-based composer Christina Volpini.

For all other accessibility requests\, please contact us at info@wavelengthmusic.ca\n—-\n“Welcome Back\, Shows!” – Wavelength’s first monthly concert of fall 2021 marks our series’ return to in-person\, indoor shows. The first of two intimate\, seated concerts at the gorgeous\, reverberant 918 Bathurst Centre will also see the series return to the sounds of its early years\, with a lineup spanning genres like shoegaze\, psych-rock and dream-pop.\nFresh off an appearance at this fall’s POP Montreal festival\, Montreal neo-shoegaze duo Bodywash return to Toronto for their first in-person show since the pandemic shut down all live performances\, just a few months after the release of their critically acclaimed debut album\, 2019’s Comforter. Like fellow Montrealers Braids\, who contributed mixing-board wisdom to Comforter\, Bodywash bring a fresh 21st century perspective to the edgy ambience of the 1990s.\nWith a lineup including some Toronto indie/psych scene veterans\, Polite Society also make their return to the stage for the band’s first concert since the release of their self-titled debut album\, on vinyl via UK label Spiral Void.\nAnd a Wavelength show wouldn’t be the same without the trippy visuals of the series’ long-time in-house projection artist\, General Chaos Visuals\, whose colourful visuals will fill the former Buddhist temple that houses the 918 Bathurst Centre.\n—-\nAbout the artists:\nBodywash was formed in 2014 when Chris Steward and Rosie Long Decter began jamming in a basement rehearsal room at McGill University in Montreal. Bonding over a shared affection for shoegaze and dream-pop\, the two found an immediate chemistry. When it came time to make a full-length album\, Bodywash enlisted Nigel Ward to record the LP. The album Comforter was mixed by Taylor Smith and Austin Tufts of the band Braids\, and was mastered by Evan Tighe. The result is the perfect insomniac’s record\, a late-night album of emotional extremes\, from the enveloping warmth of shoegaze to the stark electronics of ‘90s trip-hop and IDM. Guitars blur in and out\, melodies vanish and appear\, synths blinking like lights in a fog. It’s an album of obsessive detail buried in a blur of reverb. It draws you in and pushes you away in equal measure.\nPolite Society is a Canadian foursome comprised of psych and avant-rock devotees whose collaborations likely yield the expected and unexpected (but always polite) results. Their name is purely coincidental to the present utopian state of the world.\n—\nPoster design by Juliana Carlevaris

For all other accessibility requests\, please contact us at info@wavelengthmusic.ca \n—– \nWavelength’s series of intimate\, seated concerts at the gorgeous\, reverberant 918 Bathurst Centre continues this fall\, with a transatlantic link-up between two iconoclastic art-pop singer-songwriters: Toronto’s Marker Starling and France’s Nina Savary. Not only do both artists record for UK indie label Tin Angel Records\, but Nina Savary’s 2020 debut single for the imprint\, “Second Guessing\,” was a Marker Starling cover. \nA veteran of the Toronto music scene who performed for years under the name Mantler – and who first played the Wavelength series 20 years ago\, during our early days at Ted’s Wrecking Yard (RIP) – Chris Cummings aka Marker Starling has had an increasingly international profile in recent years. Since signing with Tin Angel in 2010\, Cummings has released six albums of increasingly joyous yet still introspective soft-rock. His 2020 LP High January saw him collaborate with two veterans of the British music scene: producer Sean O’Hagan of The High Llamas\, and vocalist Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab\, who guested on two songs. Despite the album’s title\, High January has a carefree\, summery pure-pop vibe throughout. \nBringing the “hybrid” edge to modern-day performance is French multidisciplinary artist Nina Savary\, who will present a virtual set that will be projected digitally at the venue as well as on Wavelength’s YouTube channel. Presented with the support of the French Consulate in Toronto and recorded at a country house in the South of France\, this performance will pair magically with the shimmering atmosphere of Savary’s Franco-pop recordings for Tin Angel. \nAdditional special guests will be announced at a later date\, and the evening will also feature the trademark psychedelic projections of Wavelength’s in-house lighting artist\, General Chaos Visuals. \n—– \nAbout the artists: \nAfter recording and performing for many years as Mantler\, Toronto’s Chris A. Cummings renamed himself Marker Starling in 2012. A solo performer for much of his career\, Cummings became known for his signature melancholy style\, using a Wurltizer electric piano\, with drum machine accompaniment. \nAfter a longtime association with Germany’s Tomlab label\, Cummings began working with Tin Angel Records in 2010\, when they co-released his fourth album Monody and fifth album Rosy Maze to great acclaim in 2015. Since then\, Tin Angel have released four more Marker Starling records: I’m Willing (2016)\, Anchors and Ampersands (2017)\, Trust an Amateur (2018)\, and High January (2020)\, recorded in the UK and produced by Sean O’Hagan (The High Llamas\, Stereolab). Tin Angel will release the upcoming Diamond Violence in 2022. \nCummings has collaborated with the German band Von Spar\, contributing vocals and lyrics to their albums Streetlife (2014) and Under Pressure (2019). “Deep Background\,” a song he wrote for Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier appeared on Find Me Finding You (2017) and the French-British vocalist guested on his 2020 single\, “Waiting for Grace.” His music is also released on 7e.p. Records in Japan\, where he also performed the singing voice of the character Desmond in the popular anime Carole and Tuesday (2019). \nFrench multidisciplinary artist Nina Savary was born into the world of entertainment\, taking to performing like a duck out of water\, brought up backstage\, behind the scenes of theatres across Europe. Making her debut to the stage at the mere age of four years old at La Scala in Milan\, touring with her parents’ (Jérôme Savary) explosive and free theatre company Grand Magic Circus. Now an adult\, Nina is a renowned performer; a singer\, dancer and actress\, she has been involved in many artistic projects such as musicals\, opera as well as collaborating with musicians such as Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier and Julien Gasc\, Eddy Crampes\, Marker Starling\, and her partner Astrobal\, aka Emmanuel Mario\, a producer\, arranger and composer with whom she collaborates for the band Institut and the project Vivre!. \nAfter the single “Second Guessing” composed by the wonderful Marker Starling\, Nina’s first solo album Next Level Soap Opera will be released September 24th on Tin Angel Records. The best advice one could give a happy wanderer to pinpoint Nina Savary’s universe on a map would be to proceed by elimination. Look for where she is not rather than where she actually is; for her place of residency is in the exact opposite direction of the current state of emergency. And omitting to indulge in a tired eulogy for idleness\, sloth or rest\, we can be sure that the French singer\, dancer and actress diligently steers clear from the pangs of chaos. \nAnimatist is a four piece experimental rock band from Toronto\, Ontario led by guitarist Brent O’Toole. The rhythm section\, comprised of Steve Cook on bass and Ian Hinds on drums\, form the driving foundation of the band’s powerful sound. The picture is completed by the angular melodies and ambient textures of saxophonist and synth player\, Danielle Fernandes. Together they perform rhythmically deft compositions that evoke equal parts math\, post\, and progressive rock. Animatist has toured Ontario and Quebec\, sharing the stage with artists including Fet.Nat\, ART the Band\, and Peripheral Vision. They’ve also performed for the Guelph Jazz Festival\, Rock the Coliseum\, Kazoo! Guelph and Festival Lingua Franca. \nThroughout 2019 Animatist debuted new material woven into gapless sets that were equally energetic and mesmerizing. It was through perfecting their mind altering live performances that they developed the concepts and songs that would eventually become their sophomore release\, ‘INVERTED’. Releasing on July 3rd\, 2020 on Glue Gun Records\, this album continues to explore the polyrhythmic textures\, dark atmospheres and progressive compositions they’ve come to be known for.
