Montreal composer/performer Gabriel Dharmoo’s Anthropologies imaginaires (Imaginary Anthropologies) is a solo vocal performance that interacts with a video mockumentary. Various odd or isolated vocal expressions from around the world are woven together and revisited through imaginary folklore and experimental voice techniques\, showcasing the virtuosity\, versatility\, and strangeness of the human voice. The result is a humorous and disturbing exploration of post-colonialism\, post-exoticism\, cultural extinction\, globalization\, normalized racism and cultural appropriation. Halifax-based soprano Jackson’s Voice Dance is a program of solo vocal compositions\, many written especially for her. Over the past 30 years Jackson has performed and perfected a large body of solo voice pieces from composers around the world. From pure extended vocal techniques (Marie Pelletier) to theatre without words (Alice Ping Yee Ho) to solo mini opera (James Rolfe) these pieces are guaranteed to excite\, stimulate\, and amuse.

Whether in their own music or in DJ sets\, their spacious rhythmscapes evoke tranquility\, the natural world and wisdom from elder generations within modern contexts. For their much-anticipated debut album release Giizis\, Ziibiwan has gathered a few of their close allies to celebrate the occasion. \nSome of Toronto’s most brilliantly experimental pop comes from Phedre. Their richly-textured compositions have grown into instrumental sets of high-bpm rhythmic soundscapes\, performed live using sequencers and synthesizers. The ever-changing bass-heavy sets pay tribute to club\, breakbeat\, jungle and techno\, while maintaining Phèdre’s own unique sense of musical beat exploration. \nMelody McKiver has worked with Ziibiwan for a number of years and is no stranger to the MG\, having last appeared on our stage alongside Lido Pimienta six years ago. Melody’s musical work integrates electronics with Western classical music to shape a new genre of Anishinaabe compositions. Their debut EP Reckoning was nominated for an Indigenous Music Award\, and they were a participant in the Banff Centre for the Arts’ inaugural Indigenous Classical Music Gathering. Melody is involved in their community as a mentor with the Indigenous Music Mentorship Program\, and is employed as a youth worker in Sioux Lookout\, providing mental health and cultural supports to First Nations students.

DESCRIPTION:When Did Transparency Become So Opaque? \nPanel Discussion and Performance\nCurated by Olivia Shortt\nPWYW ($10 suggested) \nClick here to RSVP \nThe Music Gallery presents a panel on transparency in music and arts programming in Tkarón:to. There is a deep need in this city and beyond to speak honestly about programming\, curation and producing in a way that organizations can both benefit and learn from the discussions. This panel will explore questions around what programmers and curators (ie. people with power) from multiple artistic disciplines are doing (as well as not doing)  in their organizations to program\, hire and work in a more inclusive and intersectional manner. The evening also features a performance by Carly Gordon and friends’ work which combines ASL and opera. \nCuratorial statement: \n“Personally\, I am both frustrated and incredibly hopeful for the future of the arts in Toronto. There is a beautiful community in this city so willing to make changes and contribute to the artists who live here. We are so afraid to have both our errors become public. Failure is not allowed \nLet’s make mistakes and be honest about it. Hindsight is 2020 as they say. \nThis is a period of time where equity-seeking folks are struggling to be heard without fear of pushback from the art forms that they exist and create within\, which are often white-led organizations. Can we as the audience\, the granting bodies\, the foundation funding arts\, the donors funding art\, ask for art that reflects not only the people in our communities but also the voices and opinions of those art-makers? We are in a period of time where any questions that arise around what the intention of an organizations’ programming can become heavily scrutinized. Where is the transparency? Who are the voices leading these organizations? How are they supporting artists in their programming? When arts programmers look inward and criticize ourselves\, do they end up patting ourselves on the back because of checked-off boxes\, or do they realize that there is more hard work to be done? \nMaking mistakes in the arts feels difficult but is a very necessary part of growth. Let’s take space to discuss the successes of art-makers and organizations who are making the necessary efforts to do better\, grow and what success looks like after making mistakes. Like fellow Montrealers Braids\, who contributed mixing-board wisdom to Comforter\, Bodywash bring a fresh 21st century perspective to the edgy ambience of the 1990s.\nWith a lineup including some Toronto indie/psych scene veterans\, Polite Society also make their return to the stage for the band’s first concert since the release of their self-titled debut album\, on vinyl via UK label Spiral Void.\nAnd a Wavelength show wouldn’t be the same without the trippy visuals of the series’ long-time in-house projection artist\, General Chaos Visuals\, whose colourful visuals will fill the former Buddhist temple that houses the 918 Bathurst Centre.\n—-\nAbout the artists:\nBodywash was formed in 2014 when Chris Steward and Rosie Long Decter began jamming in a basement rehearsal room at McGill University in Montreal. Bonding over a shared affection for shoegaze and dream-pop\, the two found an immediate chemistry. When it came time to make a full-length album\, Bodywash enlisted Nigel Ward to record the LP. The album Comforter was mixed by Taylor Smith and Austin Tufts of the band Braids\, and was mastered by Evan Tighe. The result is the perfect insomniac’s record\, a late-night album of emotional extremes\, from the enveloping warmth of shoegaze to the stark electronics of ‘90s trip-hop and IDM. Guitars blur in and out\, melodies vanish and appear\, synths blinking like lights in a fog. It’s an album of obsessive detail buried in a blur of reverb. It draws you in and pushes you away in equal measure.\nPolite Society is a Canadian foursome comprised of psych and avant-rock devotees whose collaborations likely yield the expected and unexpected (but always polite) results. A prolific recording artist\, he is a two-time Juno award winner and GRAMMY®-award nominee. \nDavid Hetherington\, for years the assistant principal cellist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra\, performs regularly as a chamber musician as well as working frequently with contemporary music ensembles such as New Music Concerts and Soundstreams Canada. Mr. Hetherington plays his 1695 cello made by Giovanni Grancino of Milan “with rare delicacy and clarity”. \nJuno-winning and Grammy-nominated pianist and composer Serouj Kradjian is hailed as a “keyboard acrobat” of “crystal virtuosity” by the press. He has established himself as a versatile artist whose readiness to break boundaries and explore different styles has made him an exciting voice on the international music scene.
