SUMMARY:International Live Journalism Presents: Climate Cocoon
DESCRIPTION:From the Website: \n“Live Journalism takes timely news topics and brings them to life through immersive\, live performance. It’s an expansion on traditional storytelling formats without the constraint of a page or a soundbite. The format engages audiences on meaningful news stories with the depth and emotional nuance of live theatre. \nForms of Live Journalism are all around us. From the personal narrative storytelling of events like “The Moth”\, to the more broad topics covered in the Ted Talk format. Live Journalism practitioners in North America and Europe have been presenting journalism on stage to continue to reach the public. \nJournalists strive for new ways to inform an audience while instilling faith in an institution whose reputation is flailing. A 2022 report from the Reuters Institute found a 13 per cent drop in overall trust in Canadian news media since 2016. Despite spending more time on screens\, 38 per cent of people surveyed actively avoid the news. Journalism is in dire need of creative ways to capture and inform an audience. Instead of chasing audiences deeper into their phones\, live journalism has the ability to tell important stories with a richness of experience that cannot be replicated on a screen.”

SUMMARY:So What Do You Think? Concert | X Avant XVIII: Neeeerrrrddddssss series
DESCRIPTION:Kicking off X Avant XVIII: Neeeerrrrddddsss is a night dedicated to local nerdery. Headlining the night is a Music Gallery commission using Nerds candy as the main instrument from Germaine Liu titled “We Made This With Love.” This two part experience features an a/v piece as well as a live sound performance blending percussion\, costumes\, and experimental choreography. These presentations will be co-created and performed with Fahmid Nibesh\, Raphael Roter\, and Mark Zurawinski. \nThroughout the evening find a sound performance and installation in the gallery room entitled Six Turntables. This project is the culmination of a series of sound-art workshops organized by Christopher Willes and in collaboration with Akash Bansal at the Toronto Public Library and The Music Gallery between 2017-2023. \nA group of young artists are brought together to listen to\, reflect on and remix recordings of 1970’s “Canadian” avant-garde music found in the Toronto Reference Library’s vinyl record collection––including some recordings from the Music Gallery Editions label. Drawing techniques of early electronic music\, sonic meditation\, turntablism\, and Fluxus event scores\, the workshops explore practices of collective listening that treat records not as commodity objects but as shared experiences. \nTICKETS HERE

SUMMARY:Music Gallery Presents: Eve Egoyan + Mauricio Pauly

Mauricio performs using multiple samplers tuned for different modes of live capture\, manipulation and effects processing of his amplified instruments and of Eve’s pianos. \nThe intimate musical partnership between Egoyan and Pauly is borderline miraculous. Their exchanges feel spontaneous inasmuch as they radiate urgency and wonder\, however they’re also deeply grounded in a distinctive sense of navigational focus. \nMG Members / Low Income / Arts Workers $10\nAdvance $15\nRegular $20 \nBuy tickets here!

SUMMARY:Zoe Alexis-Abrams Illustration Show - Gardeners Dream + Light Tables Talk
DESCRIPTION:It’s our pleasure to announce that the talented Zoë Alexis-Abrams illustration show is now on at 918 in our gallery Sun Room! \nStatement from Artist: \n“In response to my current position as Horticultural Technician Apprentice\, I’ve been dreaming of my decolonized relationship to the land. In the Anthropocene\, our community’s relationship to public space becomes alarmingly personal. My research + experiential maps bump up against Settler + Indigenous collaborations in public space planning; recognizing the Master Plans of both Allen Gardens + Toronto Island-Mnisiing as living documents with public-facing identities. \nMy experience of this research is fresh and alive. It is messy\, in-process\, + subject to change. Who has access to the dream? Who is dreaming? Whose dreams take the longest to realize? How do we reconcile project deadlines with developing relationships to land (we can’t)?”
