The recital is part of a Copland tour that includes stops in Buffalo\, Toronto and New York City. \nTickets ($25\, $20 & $15): https://www.universe.com/events/aaron-copland-the-music-within-tickets-K379J0 \nTHE STORY: Aaron Copland was a fine pianist. In 1926\, he premiered his own “Jazz” piano concerto. Continuing to write for the instrument throughout his career\, Copland turned increasingly to other pianists for interpretation. Masselos played the fantasy twice\, punctuated by a short intermission. Originally subtitled ‘The Music Within\,’ the Fantasy remained close to Copland’s heart throughout his life. To commemorate the 62nd anniversary of its premiere\, Adam Sherkin presents a re-creation of the 1957 performance\, including world premiers of his own music\, commissioned especially for the occasion: a prelude\, “The Music Within” and a postlude\, “The Music Beyond.” \nTHE SHOW: Tickets are available on this platform or at the door (same price). Wine and beer will be available for purchase and a short\, 20-minute\, intermission will punctuate the performances of the Copland Fantasy. Don’t miss this excluve recital experience! \nTHE PROGRAMME: SHERKIN: Prelude The Music Within (2019)*; COPLAND: Piano Fantasy (1955-57) – Intermission – COPLAND: Piano Fantasy (performance repeated); SHERKIN: Postlude The Music Beyond (2019)* \n*World premieres \nTHE VENUE: 918 Bathurst Centre for Culture\, Arts\, Media and Education is an arts and culture sanctuary in Toronto’s Annex Neighbourhood. SUMMARY:The Music Gallery Presents: X AVANT New Music Festival XIV: Forward
DESCRIPTION:The Music Gallery presents:\nX AVANT NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL XIV: Forward\nOctober 17-20 2019 \nPurchase Tickets Here: https://www.showclix.com/events/28836?fbclid=IwAR1Ld1RwqjJex2pzRim9qzlwULHKHsD3R14VQ3e5PLKLvvfY-wIAQA5C3Cg \nAlways dedicated to experimental and innovative music\, The Music Gallery moves “Forward” for its fourteenth X Avant festival. Each headliner presents new work – including three world premieres. \nThis festival centres on artists taking\, or attempting to take\, the next step in their work\, career or practice. For some\, “the next step” is a graduation to bigger ideas\, longer tours and more money. In creative music\, moving forward with art is associated with instrumental mastery and developing a personal musical vocabulary. \nRegardless of genre\, all forward paths in music require an artist to dedicate mind\, body and soul. Sometimes life challenges and structural inequities make it difficult or impossible to take the next step. There is no single way forward: twists\, turns and dead ends await. We explore this theme with four headliners who present new work\, plus two panel discussions. \nLido Pimienta / Willi Williams / New Chance\nSarah Hennies / Germaine Liu\nSound of the Mountain / OKAN / Holy Hum\nToshimaru Nakamura / Bea Labikova / Rebecca Hennessy /\nHeather Saumer / Tetuzi Akiyama / Karen Ng \nAll shows are at the Music Gallery\, located at 918 Bathurst Centre for Culture\, Arts\, Media and Education. \nEARLYBIRD PASS $50

SUMMARY:D.D. Jackson Solo and with Guests - Toronto CD Release
DESCRIPTION:Caliban Arts and Trane Live Present:\nThe Trane Trilogy Concerts : Part 1 – D.D. Jackson and Guests\nLive at 918 Bathurst Street Centre \nPurchase Tickets Here  \nCaliban Arts and Trane Live in association with 918 Bathurst Street Toronto launches The Trane Trilogy Concerts in 3 Parts. Three concerts for each Part. The concerts present the incredible creative and influential works of both local and international recording artists. Please stay tuned and connected for more details on upcoming presentations. \nPart 1/Concert 1 Features:\nEMMY- AND JUNO-AWARD-WINNING CANADIAN JAZZ PIANIST/COMPOSER D.D. JACKSON RELEASES FIRST JAZZ CD AS LEADER IN OVER 12 YEARS \nToronto Release: “Live at Freedom of Sound”\, Saturday November 16\, 8pm. Doors at 7pm\nTickets: Early Bird $25 (to November 8); Advance $30 (November 16) \nMore on D.D. Jackson and launch or “Live at Freedom of Sound”:\nOttawa\, Canada-born\, New York area- based D.D. Jackson’s new CD “Live at Freedom of Sound” captures a recent solo piano performance that took place at the Montclair-based festival organized by drummer Pheeroan Aklaff’s Seed Artists. “I had actually just gotten off a plane from L.A. after winning an Emmy Award the night before and was definitely tired. However\, something that evening just clicked\, and the performance became an enjoyable and surprisingly effective representation of where my solo piano playing is today.” \nThat journey has taken him from a career that’s now included 13 CD’s as leader or co-leader (including two for the major label BMG)\, performing all over the world with prominent artists ranging from David Murray\, Jack De Johnette\, and Billy Bang\, to MacArthur Genius Grant drummer Dafnis Prieto and James Carter. But why the long gap since his last jazz recording as leader? “The making of my last CD (Serenity Song\, 2007 Justin Time Records) was right around the time I began settling down and raising a family\, and it was appealing to finally be in one place for extended periods of time instead of constantly on the road touring”\, Jackson states. “At the same time\, I was also gaining an increasing fascination with technology and began writing more and more for media\, which was a perfect gig for a homeward-bound dad.” \nJackson’s work\, in fact\, culminated in his 2nd Emmy Award as a television composer just this past May (among his 5 total Emmy nominations to date)\, and he also struck up a regular working relationship with New York-based The Roots on various projects (and appeared on two of their most recent CD’s\, participating as arranger\, pianist\, and producer on different tracks). Jackson has also been passionate about teaching during this period\, first as an award-winning professor at Hunter College; at the Harlem School of the Arts (where he taught jazz prodigy Matthew Whitaker and the “The Voice” finalist We’ McDonald\, among many); and now at Brooklyn College\, where he’s been helping with their new Global Jazz Masters degree and also teaching Media Scoring. \nAll the while\, though\, Jackson continued playing and performing. “Live at Freedom of Sound” is a tight set of 5 compositions\, ranging from re-imaginings of older material (including “For Don” – originally written by Jackson in tribute to his late mentor\, the jazz pianist/composer Don\, now re-dedicated to another great influence on Jackson\, the late baritone saxophonist Hamiet Bluiett; and “ Richard’s Tune” – a Don Pullen composition Don originally wrote for Muhal Richard Abrams)… \nFor tickets and more for information please visit www.calibanartstheatre.com . \nCDs will be available at the show and at http://ddjackson.bandcamp.com.\nMore info on D.D. at: http://ddjackson.com

SUMMARY:New Music Concerts and the Music Gallery present The Mouths That Roar: Gabriel Dharmoo + Janice Jackson
DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets Here \n$35 Regular\n$25 MG Members\, Seniors\, Arts Workers\n$10 Students \nAn outrageous double bill of vocal pyrotechnics featuring Gabriel Dharmoo and Janice Jackson. Montreal composer/performer Gabriel Dharmoo’s Anthropologies imaginaires (Imaginary Anthropologies) is a solo vocal performance that interacts with a video mockumentary. Various odd or isolated vocal expressions from around the world are woven together and revisited through imaginary folklore and experimental voice techniques\, showcasing the virtuosity\, versatility\, and strangeness of the human voice. The result is a humorous and disturbing exploration of post-colonialism\, post-exoticism\, cultural extinction\, globalization\, normalized racism and cultural appropriation. Halifax-based soprano Jackson’s Voice Dance is a program of solo vocal compositions\, many written especially for her. Over the past 30 years Jackson has performed and perfected a large body of solo voice pieces from composers around the world. From pure extended vocal techniques (Marie Pelletier) to theatre without words (Alice Ping Yee Ho) to solo mini opera (James Rolfe) these pieces are guaranteed to excite\, stimulate\, and amuse.

SUMMARY:The Music Gallery Presents: Ziibiwan “Giizis” Album Release with Phedre and Melody McKiver
DESCRIPTION:$15 Regular/$13 Advance/$10 Students\, Members\nadd $5 to your ticket for a download code for Giizis\n \nPurchase tickets here: https://www.showclix.com/event/ziibiwan/listing?fbclid=IwAR0JE4h7SMCZamvUAuH7ClV3VdHA-DoycEUJPSwXC2T6E2XmAkGBXHPtp0Y \nAnishinaabe experimental-electronic producer Ziibiwan has travelled a long road in just a few short years. Whether in their own music or in DJ sets\, their spacious rhythmscapes evoke tranquility\, the natural world and wisdom from elder generations within modern contexts. For their much-anticipated debut album release Giizis\, Ziibiwan has gathered a few of their close allies to celebrate the occasion. \nSome of Toronto’s most brilliantly experimental pop comes from Phedre. Their richly-textured compositions have grown into instrumental sets of high-bpm rhythmic soundscapes\, performed live using sequencers and synthesizers. The ever-changing bass-heavy sets pay tribute to club\, breakbeat\, jungle and techno\, while maintaining Phèdre’s own unique sense of musical beat exploration. \nMelody McKiver has worked with Ziibiwan for a number of years and is no stranger to the MG\, having last appeared on our stage alongside Lido Pimienta six years ago. Melody’s musical work integrates electronics with Western classical music to shape a new genre of Anishinaabe compositions. Their debut EP Reckoning was nominated for an Indigenous Music Award\, and they were a participant in the Banff Centre for the Arts’ inaugural Indigenous Classical Music Gathering. Melody is involved in their community as a mentor with the Indigenous Music Mentorship Program\, and is employed as a youth worker in Sioux Lookout\, providing mental health and cultural supports to First Nations students.

SUMMARY:The Music Gallery Presents: When Did Transparency Become So Opaque?
DESCRIPTION:When Did Transparency Become So Opaque? \nPanel Discussion and Performance\nCurated by Olivia Shortt\nPWYW ($10 suggested) \nClick here to RSVP \nThe Music Gallery presents a panel on transparency in music and arts programming in Tkarón:to. There is a deep need in this city and beyond to speak honestly about programming\, curation and producing in a way that organizations can both benefit and learn from the discussions. This panel will explore questions around what programmers and curators (ie. people with power) from multiple artistic disciplines are doing (as well as not doing)  in their organizations to program\, hire and work in a more inclusive and intersectional manner. The evening also features a performance by Carly Gordon and friends’ work which combines ASL and opera. \nCuratorial statement: \n“Personally\, I am both frustrated and incredibly hopeful for the future of the arts in Toronto. There is a beautiful community in this city so willing to make changes and contribute to the artists who live here. We are so afraid to have both our errors become public. Failure is not allowed \nLet’s make mistakes and be honest about it. Hindsight is 2020 as they say. \nThis is a period of time where equity-seeking folks are struggling to be heard without fear of pushback from the art forms that they exist and create within\, which are often white-led organizations. Can we as the audience\, the granting bodies\, the foundation funding arts\, the donors funding art\, ask for art that reflects not only the people in our communities but also the voices and opinions of those art-makers? We are in a period of time where any questions that arise around what the intention of an organizations’ programming can become heavily scrutinized. Where is the transparency? Who are the voices leading these organizations? How are they supporting artists in their programming? When arts programmers look inward and criticize ourselves\, do they end up patting ourselves on the back because of checked-off boxes\, or do they realize that there is more hard work to be done? \nMaking mistakes in the arts feels difficult but is a very necessary part of growth. Let’s take space to discuss the successes of art-makers and organizations who are making the necessary efforts to do better\, grow and what success looks like after making mistakes. This is an opportunity to hear and discuss examples of positive success in working to be more transparent in our efforts to develop arts programming.” \nModerator: Cole Alvis\nPanelists: Ian Cusson\, Menon Dwarka\, Teiya Kasahara\, Asad Raza \nPerformance: Carly Gordon and ASL + Opera Project

SUMMARY:The Music Gallery presents Emergents II: Bakarlari
DESCRIPTION:The Music Gallery presents\nEmergents II: Bakarlari\npart of the Emergents Series\nCurated by Sarah Constant \nSunday March 1\n$12 Regular / Advanced $8 Member/Student\nDoors 7:30PM / Concert 8PM \nIn this concert\, Montreal-based soloists collective Bakarlari plays in Toronto for the first time. \nActive across Canada and internationally as improvisers and performers of experimental music\, the members of Bakarlari—trumpeter Émilie Fortin\, tubist Michael Mansourati\, and clarinetist Charlotte Layec—have come together with a focus on new solo music: performances of rarely-heard pieces for their instruments\, the development of new single-instrument projects\, and the creation of concerts that bring together their three distinct sonic vocabularies. \nAt the Music Gallery\, Bakarlari will present their latest project\, pairing contemporary solo works for trumpet\, tuba\, and clarinet with new pieces developed with early-career and Toronto-based composers. Between them\, the collective will play solo compositions by Olga Neuwirth\, Cort Lippe\, and Elliott Carter alongside new collaborations with composers Alexandre David\, Quinn Jacobs\, and Olivia Shortt—as well as a first-ever ensemble appearance for the premiere of a new trio by Toronto/Hamilton-based composer Christina Volpini.
