SUMMARY:IANNUS by The Happenstancers
DESCRIPTION:IANNUS pulls the audience back and forth through time\, juxtaposing the 17th and 18th century music of John Dowland\, Henry Purcell\, and Mary Dering with the contemporary works of Judith Weir\, Oliver Knussen\, and Thomas Ades\, and others. \nUsing the music of the past as a guide\, these modern British composers draw inspiration from their predecessors\, quoting their music directly\, referencing their forms\, and sourcing ideas from their shared history. With dramatic staging and lighting\, Judith Weir’s micro-opera King Harald’s Saga is woven throughout the programme\, forming the dramatic core of this performance. \nPerformers for IANNUS include — Hillary Jean Young\, voice; Katya Poplyansky\, violin; Sarah Gans\, cello; Aleh Remezau\, oboe; Kevin Ahfat\, keyboards; and Brad Cherwin\, clarinets. \nIANNUS is presented with the generous support of the Toronto Arts Council\, Ontario Arts Council\, and Canada Council for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Wavelength Presents: Circuit des Yeax & Picastro
DESCRIPTION:Circuit Des Yeux (Chicago / Matador Records) \nPicastro (Toronto / slowcore pioneers) \nJune 13\, 2022 \nProjections by General Chaos Visuals\nDecor by Roxanne Ignatius \nMonday\, June 13\, 2022\n@ 918 Bathurst Centre for Culture\, Arts\, Media & Education\n918 Bathurst St.\,Toronto \n$20 advance at ShowClix.com\nTickets on sale February 7th\, 10:00 AM\n*Note: tickets currently held at 50% capacity\, to be reassessed in the future. \nAll Ages / Licensed \n“Waiting for Summer” is feeling like a solstice-bearing catharsis to look forward to during these frigid months. With the expectation of returning to full capacity by June\, Wavelength is excited to be presenting Chicago’s Circuit Des Yeux and Toronto’s own Picastro at 918 Bathurst. \nChicago’s Circuit Des Yeux is a singular experimental-epic-pop weaver and brainchild of Haley Fohr. Her sixth album and debut for seminal indie label Matador Records\, -io\, was released in October 2021 to widespread critical acclaim (Pitchfork\, Mojo\, Uncut\, Dusted\, The Wire\, The Quietus\, Beats Per Minute). Expansive and emotional\, the album is a sonic footprint of how grief becomes a landscape. Written for a 23-piece orchestra and created during the pandemic\, Haley Fohr’s performance is bound to be arresting and poignantly transformative. \nStarting the evening will be Toronto’s slowcore staples\, Picastro. If you are not acquainted with the brilliance of Liz Hysen\, then today is your lucky day. Started in 1998 as a solo project by Hysen\, Picastro expands to include an ever-evolving array of collaborators\, who have included Owen Pallett\, Nick Storring\, and Brandon Valdivia (aka Mas Aya). Picastro’s latest release\, I’ve never met a stranger\, is an EP of touching covers\, created by friends; cultivated by the uncertainty of life during a pandemic and harnessing the magic of not knowing. \nCOVID Protocols: \nYour safety is our primary concern. Live event protocols are likely to change month to month. At this time\, audience members aged two and older are required to always wear face coverings while on the venue property\, except when actively eating and drinking. Proof of full vaccination minimum 2 weeks prior to the event is required to enter. \nAccessibility: \n918 Bathurst is not currently wheelchair accessible due to stairs (two half-flights to enter the performance space\, and one flight to access the washrooms). For all other accessibility requests\, please contact us at info@wavelengthmusic.ca \nAudience Policy: \nWavelength respects the rights of each member of our diverse audience and is committed to providing an environment in which everyone can feel safe. Any behaviour which could reasonably be perceived as physically\, emotionally\, or mentally harmful to individuals at Wavelength events will not be tolerated. This includes: racism\, sexism\, homophobia\, transphobia\, body shaming\, ableism\, ageism\, and all forms of violence. \nPlease be respectful of others and help Wavelength create a fun and safer space for everyone. If you need help\, or see others in need of help\, please talk to a Wavelength staff member or volunteer. \nFor information on Wavelength’s Code of Conduct and Anti-Harassment and Violence policies\, please go here.

SUMMARY:The Music Gallery Presents: Sounding Difference / Listening Care
DESCRIPTION:“An open level listening and sounding event for a collective creative experience. The text scores of Pauline Oliveros are spoken word instructions that are accessible to all: they propose listening strategies and voice toning based on the universal system of seven vowels\, the breath\, and one’s own senses as sources for collective improvisation. We use Oliveros’ thought on listening as multi sensory perception as care\, as a map for social and environmental evolution\, and as self-organizing sonic beauty. \nThis will be an experiential gathering to focus on well being and inclusivity in relation to listening attention: to our environment and the more than human sound field\, in a memory archive and creative imaginative world making sense. \nIn this resonant space\, we begin with land and body of water acknowledgement\, internal listening\, a warm up for sounding\, toning in microtonal difference tones\, exploring the Sonic Meditations and improvisatory Text Scores of Oliveros\, with simple phrases that show the way into a sound field.” \nTo learn more\, and to purchase tickets\, click here.
