SUMMARY:James White: The Art of Mindreading
DESCRIPTION:Jaymes brings his mind-blowing brand of entertainment up close and personal. Jaymes and the audience explore ancient mind reading customs and traditions in ‘The Art of Mindreading.’ \nThis experience is based on the Oracle act. Using the ancient study of mindreading\, Jaymes with the help of the audience\, is able to accomplish astonishing feats of memory\, hypnotism and mindreading. Jaymes uses a thorough understanding of statistics\, his own intuition\, logic and the hidden talents of the human mind. Audiences of all ages leave Jaymes’ shows feeling amazed\, uplifted\, and with a much greater appreciation for the untapped potential within their own mind. \n“The Art of Mindreading” moves fluidly from drama to suspense to hilarity. Experience first-hand the world of extrasensory perception! \nDesigned for intimate groups\, this show is a walk-around performance and takes Jaymes directly into the audience. The experience is performed only inches away from guests and sometimes inside of their own minds. It will give everyone something to talk about\, not only during the event\, but for days after!

SUMMARY:JJJJJerome Ellis (Nights 1+2)
DESCRIPTION:Over two nights\, artists JJJJJerome Ellis\, Christof Migone + Marla Hlady\, and Alex Raja Ven explore sound’s liberatory potential—moving through\, across\, and against time. This two-part performance program explores embodied sound—its resonance\, pronunciation\, utterance\, and silence. \nNight 1: \nNight one begins with Alex Raja Ven’s embodied approach to ambient music and sound as a liberatory portal. The evening continues with JJJJJerome Ellis performing The Clearing (2021). The Clearing challenges us to reimagine dysfluency in speech and its impact on how we exist in the social realm. Ellis\, who speaks with a block stutter—manifesting as intervals of silence—calls these pauses “clearings.” They argue that stuttering\, like music\, opens time and suggests that disabled speakers\, particularly Black individuals\, face temporal regulation and oppression that seek to pathologize and criminalize. Of the project\, they share: “I hope this album offers the listener some of what my stutter offers me: an opportunity to imagine new ways of being in time.” \nNight 2: \nNight two continues with two interventions on time. Christof Migone + Marla Hlady present Temper (Span Time) (2025)\, a performance imagining a time-travelling\, resonant chorus of metronomes. Then\, JJJJJerome Ellis performs Aster of Ceremonies (2023)\, summoning a “chorus of voices past and present.” \nTemper (Span Time) features twelve vintage electronic metronomes\, all set to the slowest speed. \nSome don’t keep time steadily\, while others emit a noticeably loud electrical hum. None can be depended on for accuracy; each functions idiosyncratically. Manipulated and mixed\, they no longer demarcate time but instead jumble\, disorder\, and confuse it. Each metronome spans time in its own singular way\, yet together\, they produce a chaotic chorale. \nExpanding on The Clearing\, Aster of Ceremonies weaves together spoken word\, live music\, and projected text. Combining piano\, saxophone\, dulcimer\, and voice\, Ellis explores connections between blackness\, disabled speech\, divinity\, nature\, sound\, and time. Through a devotional song cycle\, Ellis honours 18th- and 19th-century Black runaway slaves who stuttered\, offering a profound counter-narrative to the “masters of all vessels” by invoking the imagery of a family of flowers. This lecture-performance is an ongoing attempt to\, in the words of critic Hortense Spillers\, “hear [slavery’s] stutter more clearly.” \nJJJJJerome Ellis’ performances of The Clearing and Aster of Ceremonies will have ASL and CART (Communication Access Real-time Translation) interpretation. Alex Raja Ven’s performance will have subwoofer-adjacent seating options. \nCo-curated by Sara Constant and Karie Liao\, this program is co-presented with the Blackwood Gallery as part of In a Manner of Speaking\, in collaboration with the Music Gallery’s 2024-2025 season.\nAll prices inclusive of HST.

SUMMARY:The Music Gallery Presents: What Is: Heartbreak
DESCRIPTION:This is the first night of What Is: heart(break) presented by The Music Gallery.  1:11 moonwatching dives deep into luminescent moonlit midnight pools exploring the full scope of the human voice accompanied by electronics\, foley\, and found sounds diffusing the night’s air in 6.2 surround sound. \nEthereal\, avant-garde sonic textures transport us into the realm of the moon\, ruler of dreams and all wandering lovers. In the thick of pale light and dark shadows\, 1:11 moonwatching’s experimental improvisation and classical vocalism melded with visuals by Gary Kirkham remind us of moons replete with wishes and yet-to-be’s and of fateful encounters under night’s embrace. \nFor more information and tickets\, click here

SUMMARY:The Music Gallery Presents: What Is: Heartbreak
DESCRIPTION:This is the last night of What Is: heart(break). The show proposes the dignity of endings\, clearings\, and cathartic release. Secondsight offers a live\, sonic meditation\, gently guiding us to let go and empty it out\, with the awareness that these are aspects of an intricate and never-ending cycle. Attendees can lie down and get comfy through a meditation that hovers between experimental ambient\, esoteric sound healing practices\, and spacious atmospheric textures inspired by afrosurrealism and dreamwork. \nAnd when an ending still feels unbearable\, Empty-It-Out Ensemble forms a drone orchestra punctuated by offerings by poets Jade Blair and Khashayar Mohammadi. Together\, they create moments of trance\, stillness\, and sudden breaks that transport the body to a state of levity liberated from its weights and wounds. \nBoth acts serve as a beautiful cap-off to What Is: heart(break) and remind us that even when endings suck\, they’re sometimes just what we need. \nFor more information\, click here
