More About the Event:

The manner in which we use language determines the success of a conversation. In Points
of Conversation the art of communication becomes synonymous with the relationship of Art
and language. The performances and videos explore our daily frustration and love of
using language(s); the incompatibility and compatibility of language(s) and the anxiety
that we sometimes experience when we cannot properly connect words into a comprehensive
flow.

Technology has allowed for fast and easy access to communication. Dialogue travels
across oceans and continents connecting people and places through digital media. The
traveling of pixels and sound waves can results in the straining and fragmentation of
information and language. The communication of digital code along its journey can become
miss-sequenced and abstracted resulting in a message from a broken telephone. At its
destination the message is reassembled into a digital conversation of human speech.
Artwork that is being streamed online allows the artist access to a global audience
directly from their studio.

Call for Creative Submissions & Invitation to Share Your Work

Posted on: Monday, September 20th, 2010

Open Readings for Creative Writers & Creative Writing Group Launch

WHEN: Saturday September 25th, 7-10pm

WHERE: The 918 Bathurst Centre for Culture, Arts, Media & Education (1 light north of Bloor St. in the former Buddhist Temple)

COST: $0 – FREE to ALL!

www.918bathurst.com

Next week, the 918 Bathurst Centre will be hosting an Open House for all of our programming and partners during the days from 12-5pm. In addition, that Saturday evening, we’ll be launching a creative writing group in our main performance space/theatre and we’re celebrating this by putting on an Open Reading. If you have prose, poetry, scripts or anything else creative you’d like to read or perform, you are invited to do so!

This event will be a great opportunity for creative people to come together and share some exciting work. Who knows what could come of it – perhaps new writing partnerships? Perhaps a couple of actors will meet a writer/director? We hope that this nucleus of attendees will grow into a regular writing series and performance group at the Centre. There’s so much possibility – and that’s why we’re excited to put this on.

Readings will be interspersed with music and discussions! Live band TBA. Some basic refreshments provided.

All you need to do is register by emailing us at info@918bathurst.com. Describe the kind of work (i.e., short story, play, poem, etc.) and how much time you’d like for your reading. Even if you just want to come, hang out and get inspired, you’re welcome to as well!

Note that this is not an “all ages” event. There’s already some heady and controversial work on the list.

Special Screening: ANNIGONI: PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST

Posted on: Monday, September 20th, 2010

Come to the 918 on September 25th and catch a screening by award-winning filmmaker and course facilitator at the 918, Stephen Smith

Annigoni: Portrait of an Artist is the award-winning, critically acclaimed motion picture, based on the life and times of the last century’s most famous portrait painter, Italian master Pietro Annigoni.

This is the first and only film to tell the story of Annigoni. From his artistic birth in Florence, to the height of his fame and fortune Annigoni pursued his own path, standing alone against the forces of modernism in art. Annigoni was a bohemian, a drinker, a fighter and a womanizer, yet the world’s most powerful and celebrated people sought him out for portraits. Pietro Annigoni was once called the painter of beautiful women but chose instead to be the painter of beggars.

Annigoni: Portrait of an Artist reveals many of Pietro Annigoni’s previously unseen paintings as well as unveiling a lost masterpiece for the first time!

“Annigoni was not only the greatest painter of the twentieth century but his works rank with the most celebrated paintings of all time” ~ Bernard Berenson.
