B Current and Theatre Archipelago present the world premiere of Obeah Opera, February 22nd – March 4 at 918 Bathurst. Starring, Canadian Calypso Supreme, Macomere Fifi, the power house Toronto rock soul songstress Saida Baba Talibah and introducing Joni Neh Rita as Tituba.

Set in the late 17th century, Obeah Opera tells a story of life and work among women silenced by the most infamous ‘witch-hunt’ in history. Tituba and a handful of Caribbean women imported as slaves into the American colony of Salem are arrested and accused of practicing obeah! A healing art seen only as blasphemy and witchcraft through the eyes of the local Puritans.

We follow Tituba’s journey in the days before her capture, her incarceration, and her stand on trial in this uplifting Caribbean themed opera. Sung in complete A capella form, and performed by a cast of fifteen, Obeah Opera explodes myths surrounding the Salem Witch Trials, unravels the branding of obeah with evil and witchery, ties it back to its true spiritual nature rooted in West Africa, and finally gives voice to a group of women whose story has been missing from history books.

For over sixty years our dedicated teachers and volunteers have been teaching children of Czech heritage in supplementary language programmes. MMI funds the school from its own donations and budget with no government support.

Currently the classes offered are engaging, lively and teach children the basics of communication in Czech, be it reading, writing, listening and speaking. Additionally, children learn about Czech culture, tradition and heritage; and have fun putting on performances and plays.

The Institute has been fortunate in obtaining the generous patronage of the Czech Foreign Ministry which supplies our school with the latest in children’s story books and educational material.

Classes are offered to children 5 to 12 years of age and run every Saturday (except for long weekends). The winter semester stars in mid-September and runs for 12 Saturdays. The spring semester starts in mid-January and runs for 20 Saturdays.

Classes start at 10 am and end at 12 pm. A nominal fee of $5 per child per class is charged with discounts for other children from the same family.

This year will mark the 2nd annual Bluebird Food-Art exhibition.

The Bluebird Exhibition came about as an outlet to showcase unique and interesting expressions that vividly describe and demonstrate the interrelationship and connectivity between Food and Art.

…The exhibition is strictly a non-profit event aimed at:

• Pioneering and establishing an original and unique Food-Art exhibition in the city of Toronto that showcases extraordinary skills and talent of local artists and food enthusiasts.

•	Giving back to the underprivileged in the Toronto community.

- Each year the ‘cover’ charge to access the event is non-perishable food items that are initially used to create an ongoing exhibit throughout the night. All food donations are then generously donated to The Daily Bread Food Bank.

•	To create an unforgettable culinary experience by engaging, captivating and shocking guests with Bluebird’s creatively inspiring edible and inedible displays.

We are still seeking like-minded sponsors, individuals and Food Art enthusiasts to join us in making this year’s event a colossal success. The event will also include live entertainment, inventive hors d’oeuvres, refreshments and a substantial amount of media coverage to create a fun filled and memorable experience.

Please feel free to review the event details, media kit and pictures from last year at:
