In Pursuit by Nicholas Shick plays with ambiguous narratives as layered as his silk screening process. In this installation, panels of life-size figures appear to run through the gallery and out into the main entrance of the space. In this chase it is never clear who is chasing whom, and the motivations behind the chase are left to the viewer to decide. The existential battle of “us and them” and the fear of the unknown come into play, leaving the viewer to fill in the blanks of the story.

OPEN YOUTH PRINTMAKING WORKSHOP

with the support of the OCAD Printmaking Department

A youth workshop teaching the principles of printmaking. After demonstrations, youth-artists will create original artworks under the guidance of instructors. Artworks created in this workshop will then be put on display in Gallery 918 as part of the PRINTOPOLIS Festival, creating a community experience within a traditional exhibition.

The 918 Bathurst Centre is hosting a one-day printmaking workshop as part of the Open Studio’s Printopolis Festival, Saturday October 9, 2-4pm. Printopolis is a citywide festival celebrating the many forms of printmaking. Youth 10-18 years old will be introduced to the basic techniques involved in screen printing and stenciling.

Artists Tara Cooper and Nicholas Shick of the OCAD Printmaking Department, along with the help of OCAD students, will provide thorough demonstrations, and then the participants will each create their own original works. At least one work by each participant will be displayed in the Centre’s new gallery space – Gallery 918 – for the duration of the Festival alongside Nicholas Shick’s exhibition, In Pursuit.

To keep the workshop accessible, registration is only $10.00.

anitafrika! dub theatre has the city of toronto waiting in high anticipation for the third and final festival of the 2009-2010 season! through the artistic direction of visionary dubpoet d’bi young, at the end of the summer 6 young women will be presenting their full-length plays at the word! sound! powah! festival. for the past two years anitafrika dub theatre has been the launching pad for emerging canadian playwrights who specialize in biomyth monodrama. founded in the summer of 2008 and currently wrapping up its second season, the theatre has been working with 6 resident artists for the 2009-2010 season under the artistic direction of d’bi.young.

What is Multisport?

Multi-sport simply means that your child will be introduced to a variety of sports. Each week or class the skills for a different sport will be featured. Children will practice and explore these skills by playing skill related games; the games within the games. Sports offered include tennis, ball hockey soccer, track & field, baseball, basketball, football and volleyball.

What is Sportplay?

Sportplay provides multi-sport programs and athletic instruction for 2 – 8 year old boys and girls. Our goal is to develop the running, jumping, throwing, catching and striking skills children can use to participate in recreation and sports programming for the rest of their lives. Sportplay programs are fun, positive and non-competitive. All games and activities are focused on maximizing participation and individual skill development.

With ambiguous feelings about the institution of marriage and unwilling to commit to anything less than perfection, Caroline opts to re-invent a long standing social convention. The audience joins Caroline as her family and friends on her unusual wedding day and follow along on her beach vacation –- her honeymoon for one. Filled with zany with, improv, dance and song, Caroline pokes holes in our notions of “wedded bliss” — but ultimately finds that even a long-term relationship with herself has its pitfalls.

A theatrical Jackie-of-all-trades, singer, dancer, actor, producer, writer, clown, teacher and comedienne Christel Bartelse recently wowed Fringe audiences with her one-woman show CHAOTICA, which toured Ottawa, Wakefield, and Saskatoon; as well as winning the Best-in-Venue Impresario Award and nomination for the Brickenden Award for Outstanding Touring Production in London. This show also commanded sold out performances at North America’s largest and most competitive Fringe in Edmonton, and has played Toronto twice –at the Festival of Clowns and at The Theatre Centre.
